Sorrow and Grief

11/12/2019

Abba,

Sorrow in this life seems to be a thing of nagging insistence.   It comes in a moment and lingers well beyond its welcome.  The grief and ache our hearts feel clings like a nightmare.  We keep hoping we will wake and find all is really right in the world.  But the waking never comes.  The grief continues.

In these moments, O Great God, we run to you!  In these moments, we find refuge under the shelter of Your wings. In these moments, we take sanctuary in the fortress You are for us!  What else do we have?  There is none other that is as safe, as secure as You.  We run and find in Your embrace, the peace, the security, the joy that our grief threatens to rob us of.

We often fail to understand the purpose of Your will and working.  And perhaps, even, we struggle to trust.  But trust we must.  For You are still good.  You make no mistakes.  You never lose control of the universe.  You are always working for Your glory and our good.  Always.  Understanding of Your purpose and will is not required for us to trust Your holy and righteous character.  And so…we strive to trust; to rest in you.

Today, our hearts are heavy.  Death, physical death, once again shatters our world.  But even in the thralls of death, we must trust.  Even in the grief of losing the ones we love, we will trust.  Even when a life is cut far shorter than it should be, we do trust.  In our sorrow at the loss of a husband, father, brother, son, friend….we take refuge in You.  When the nightmare won't end, we cling to you with all our might.  For you are our refuge, our shelter, and our fortress.  And you make no mistakes.  We find in You, the safety and security, the comfort and joy to be able to continue.  Your grace sustains and carries us.

We miss our friend.  We miss our loved one.  But we know that he is with you.  And we praise and thank you for caring for him and never letting him go.  We ask for Your sustaining grace for us while we wait for our time to join You, and him, when we enter eternity.  Until then, we rest in You.  We trust You.  For you are good.

Amen.
