Psalm 89:8–9 (ESV): 8 O Lord God of hosts,
who is mighty as you are, O Lord,
with your faithfulness all around you?
9 You rule the raging of the sea;
when its waves rise, you still them.
Abba,
I have been pondering a lot lately about the coronavirus. Following the news, the outbreaks, the death tolls. At first, out of curiosity. Then, if I am to admit it, out of concern, and at times, even out of fear. Not for myself. For I liken it to the flu and though, unpleasant, not deadly to me (Most likely). But I fear for those in my life, like my youngest son, who are susceptible to respiratory sickness. There have been moments I have had to calm my fears by turning back to your word and remembering truths such as this one in the 89th chapter of Psalms.
O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are…
Rhetorical…of course. Does not beg or require an answer, for it is clear…NONE.
There are none who equal your might.
There are none who equal your wisdom
There are none who equal your grace and mercy
There are none who love as fully and completely as you
There are none who have the ability to thwart your will.
In today’s society, we talk about companies who gain a monopoly on the market because few can contend with their resources and influence. They push others out and destroy their competition due to their might and wealth.
Well, Abba….you hold a monopoly over the universe. There is none who can contend. Many will oppose and put themselves against you, for sure. But none will ever be successful because none are as mighty as you are. None!
What a comfort and truth this is, Abba.
We can hold to this because the evidence of it is all around us.
The evidence of your faithfulness is ever present and abounding!
The faithful rising and setting of the sun
The faithful rains each season to water the ground
The constancy of earth’s orbit that continues to sustain life on this globe
To name just a few…
But it is more, Abba.
Your faithfulness is seen in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
It is seen in your changing of lives, freeing men from their bondage to sin.
It is seen when joy is found in hardship and trial
It is seen when death comes with excitement and anticipation
It is seen when sorrow is turned into rejoicing
It is seen when hardship is embraced with thanksgiving
It is seen when trust finds its footing even with questions still hanging unanswered.
It it seen when you are valued above all else in this life.
You are trustworthy.
You are powerful.
Even the wind and waves are controlled by the power of your hands.
There is nothing outside of your control. Nothing outside of your will.
And you are infinitely good.
Yes, Abba, this life will cause many things to come at us that prompt fear.
But what have we to fear when these words are true…
Psalm 89:8–9 (ESV): 8 O Lord God of hosts,
who is mighty as you are, O Lord,
with your faithfulness all around you?
9 You rule the raging of the sea;
when its waves rise, you still them.

We trust you.
You are good.
You are God.
